‘Basketball Star’ Curry “Honored with World Golf Hall of Fame Merit Award”

Awarded the 'Charlie Sifford' for Contributions to Promoting Diversity in Golf
Ceremony to be Held at Pinehurst, Host of Next June's US Open

NBA star Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors) will receive the ‘Charlie Sifford Award’ presented by The World Golf Hall of Fame.

On the 17th (local time), The World Golf Hall of Fame announced that Curry is being honored for his contributions to promoting diversity in golf. Curry is an avid golf fan. In 2019, he made significant donations to support men’s and women’s golf programs at Howard University, a historically Black university in Washington D.C., for six years. Two years later, he launched a project to help young players from underprivileged backgrounds gain access to golf.

In a statement, Curry said, "I am honored to receive the Charlie Sifford Award," adding, "I believe golf can grow by providing equal opportunities to young golfers with passion, dedication, and determination." The award ceremony is planned for June 10, 2024, during the 124th US Open at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in North Carolina, USA. The Charlie Sifford Award was created to honor Charlie Sifford (1922?2015), the first African American to become a member of the PGA Tour.

Curry is a ‘legendary shooter’ who won the NBA regular season MVP in 2015 and 2016. He is especially known as a golf enthusiast. An amateur expert with a handicap of 0.1, he expressed his passion in an interview with Golf Digest, saying he has considered transforming into a professional golfer after retirement. In 2017, he competed as a player in the PGA Tour’s Korn Ferry (second-tier) Tour Ellie Mae Classic but missed the cut, although he shot 74 on both days. In 2018, he even planned to host a PGA Tour event, demonstrating his exceptional love for golf. Last July, Curry won the American Century Championship, a tournament where celebrities compete in golf skills.
