Jordan King "Cannot Accept Palestinian Refugees... Egypt Also Opposes"
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on the 17th (local time) warned Iran and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah not to intervene in the Israel-Hamas conflict.
After meeting with King Abdullah II of Jordan in Berlin on the same day, Chancellor Scholz said at a joint press conference, according to dpa news agency, "The German government, together with its allies, is doing its best to prevent this conflict from escalating further."
It is analyzed that the warning message was sent to block the possibility of escalation, as intervention by Iran and Hezbollah in this situation could expand the conflict throughout the Middle East.
Chancellor Scholz emphasized, "The Palestinian people are not Hamas, and Hamas has no right to speak on behalf of the Palestinian people," adding, "The Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are also victims of Hamas."
On the afternoon of the same day, Scholz is scheduled to visit Israel to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, then travel to Egypt to meet President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
Before departure, Scholz said, "I want to assess the situation in the war zone and discuss ways to prevent further escalation."
At the joint press conference, King Abdullah II stated that Jordan will not accept Palestinian refugees. Abdullah II drew a line, saying, "There will be no refugees in Jordan, and there will be no refugees in Egypt," calling this a 'red line' that must not be crossed by either side.
He emphasized, "The problems arising from the conflict between Hamas and Israel should not be passed on to other countries." Highlighting the importance of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, he said, "Civilians must be protected regardless of religion or nationality."
