Korail to Promote Improvement of Aging Facilities at Metropolitan Subway Stations

Gunpo, Banghak, and Ansan Stations Design Competition This Year... Target Completion in 2029

Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) announced on the 12th that it will promote the '2023 Metropolitan Subway Station Renovation Project.'

KORAIL has been conducting a project since 2020, in collaboration with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, to sequentially improve station facilities for subway stations that are over 25 years old, prioritizing based on factors such as aging and congestion levels.

This year, three stations were selected: Gunpo Station (Gyeongbu Line) and Banghak Station (Gyeongwon Line) on Line 1, and Ansan Station (Ansan Line) on Line 4. The project will start with a design competition and aims for completion by 2029.

The new stations will improve facilities through △aging environment improvement △relieving congestion and securing space △installation of new platform equipment and entrances.

Banghak Station was initially planned for renovation in 2020, but after consultations with local governments regarding station relocation, the northern side of the station will be renovated and the southern side newly constructed, doubling the space. Gunpo and Ansan Stations will be expanded at their current locations with wider interior remodeling.

Han Mun-hee, President of KORAIL, said, "We will continue to strive for station renovations so that they can establish themselves as complex cultural spaces beyond simple transportation functions."
