Lotte Department Store announced on October 12 that it will discover and showcase various local foods to commemorate 'World Food Day' on October 16.
World Food Day is an official commemorative day established by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) since 1979, observed annually on October 16. It raises awareness about issues arising from food such as sustainable food supply and hunger, reminding people worldwide of the importance of agriculture. More than 150 countries, including South Korea, celebrate this day with governments, companies, and NGOs participating in various events and volunteer activities.
In line with World Food Day on the 16th, Lotte Department Store plans to showcase a variety of regional specialties produced by local farmers nationwide using sustainable farming methods such as organic and eco-friendly agriculture, as well as special foods made from these ingredients.
For the first time in a department store, it will introduce 'UF Beer' from Saenggeuk Brewery, a local beer company in Eumseong, Chungbuk. Saenggeuk Brewery is run by young farmers who produce beer using barley they cultivate themselves in Eumseong, Chungbuk. While most domestic beers import foreign malt and hops as raw materials, UF Beer uses new domestic barley varieties improved from Heukho and Gangmaek barley types with the cooperation of the Rural Development Administration and Eumseong-gun Agricultural Technology Center. From barley cultivation to malt production and beer brewing, it has been recognized for its top quality and was the first in Korea to be certified as organic beer. Starting October 16, Lotte Department Store will offer Saenggeuk Brewery’s organic single malt lager beer at its main store, Jamsil, Gangnam, Dongtan, and Busan main stores. To celebrate the launch throughout October, it will be sold at a 10% discount.
Various eco-friendly and organic regional specialties will also be introduced for the first time. From the 16th, the main store and Jamsil store will sell seedless paprika produced by Dasom Farm in Hwacheon-gun, Gangwon. The seeds inside paprika are often discarded during cooking, so this new variety was developed to minimize food waste and allow easy consumption. The paprika contains no seeds or cores, so it can be eaten as is, and once ripe, it has a sweetness of over 12 Brix, making it very tasty. It will be sold in limited quantities for one week at both the main and Jamsil stores.
Organic-certified regional seafood products will also be offered. Representative among these is 'Musan Gim' from aquaculture farms in Sinan-gun, Jeonnam. Just as weeds grow alongside crops, unwanted algae attach to seaweed during cultivation. To prevent this, acidic substances like organic acids are usually added to remove the algae. Musan Gim is made using a traditional method that removes unwanted algae with sunlight and wind without using acidic substances. Additionally, 'Organic Certified Silmiyeok' (seaweed) raised without growth promoters or antibiotics at the Geumildo fishery in Wando-gun, Jeonnam, will be sold at a total of 19 stores including the main store, Jamsil, Dongtan, and Busan main stores. To celebrate the launch, it will be sold at about a 30% discount until the end of this month.
