Results of the National Contest for Twin Panda Names
'Luibao' Meaning Wise Treasure
'Huibao' Meaning Shining Treasure
Everland, operated by Samsung C&T Resort Division, announced the names of the first twin pandas born in Korea on July 12. The names selected through a nationwide public contest are 'Luibao' and 'Huibao,' meaning 'wise treasure' and 'shining treasure,' respectively.
To select the names, Everland held a nationwide naming contest for about 40 days from August until last month. Initially, over 40,000 name suggestions were collected through comments on Everland's social media channels and the zoo fan cafe. From these, 10 pairs of names were shortlisted for the first round of online voting. In the final online and offline voting, which involved 500,000 participants, four pairs of candidate names competed, resulting in the selection of Luibao and Huibao.
On the day of the announcement, Everland introduced Luibao and Huibao to the public for the first time at Panda World, along with zoo staff including keepers Kang Cheol-won and Song Young-kwan. Until now, the twin pandas had only lived indoors and appeared outside for the first time for this naming event. Everland plans to consider publicly unveiling the twin pandas early next year once they have grown enough to interact stably with their mother.
Keeper Kang said, "I want to express my gratitude not only to Luibao and Huibao, who have grown healthily for 100 days, but also to their mother Aibao, who has shown the best maternal love." He added, "We ask for continued interest and love not only for the twins but for the entire panda family."
Pandas are usually born weighing less than 200 grams, with a very low survival rate. It is an international custom to give them Chinese names around 100 days after birth, when their health stabilizes. The older sister of the twin pandas, 'Pubao,' also received her name through public participation around her 100th day, meaning 'treasure that brings happiness.'
Luibao and Huibao are two female giant pandas, a vulnerable endangered species, born on July 7. They were born to Aibao (mother) and Lubao (father).
