New school swimming pools that can be used by both students and local residents will be newly built or expanded in five schools across four areas including Yongin, Siheung, Hwaseong, and Pocheon in Gyeonggi Province.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education announced on the 10th that this year it will carry out a project to build or expand school swimming pools at newly established or existing schools for the purpose of student survival swimming and local residents' recreational sports.
Hwaseong City will construct a swimming pool at Dongtan 23 Elementary School, scheduled to open in September 2026, and plans to expand the swimming pool at the existing Byeongjeom Elementary School (Gyeonggi Hwaseong Student Swimming Pool).
Siheung City's Sorae Elementary School will expand its swimming pool in connection with the Green Smart Future School Project, while Yongin City's Yongcheon Elementary School and Pocheon City's Ildong Elementary School will also proceed with building swimming pools within existing schools.
Earlier, the Provincial Office of Education was selected for the Ministry of Education's school complex facility public project this year to establish swimming pools in three regions. As a result, the number of school swimming pools in the province has increased to 27.
Lee Heon-ju, head of the Facilities Division at the Provincial Office of Education, said, "With the construction of these school swimming pools, we have secured a foundation for recreational sports that can be used by both students and local residents," adding, "We will continue to strive to expand facilities that schools and local communities can share."
