Daegu Metropolitan Transit Corporation is planning to introduce an unmanned operation system when replacing the trains and signal systems of Daegu Metro Line 1 around 2035.
Last year, a detailed safety inspection and remaining lifespan evaluation were conducted on the Line 1 trains (which began operation on November 26, 1997), and it was assessed that they can operate until 2035.
The introduction of the unmanned operation system is a project to replace the existing Line 1 system, currently operated by drivers, with an unmanned operation system, following the commercialization of the wireless communication-based Korean Train Control System (KTCS-M) and the establishment of LTE-R, an integrated railway wireless network, which have verified the performance and safety of the foundational technologies enabling unmanned trains.
This project involves upgrading signal facilities for the first time domestically on an urban railway line and manufacturing and introducing unmanned trains, with a large-scale project cost of approximately 580 billion KRW.
Daegu Metropolitan Transit Corporation plans to establish a plan for introducing unmanned trains through a feasibility study on safety and economic efficiency conducted by a specialized agency in 2024.
Kim Ki-hyeok, CEO of Daegu Metropolitan Transit Corporation, stated, “We will proceed after thorough review based on the safety and reliability of unmanned operation, and if unmanned trains are introduced, it is expected to save about 13.5 billion KRW annually.”
