The academic symposium hosted by the citizen group Dongnip will be held on the afternoon of the 11th in Room 430 of the Francisco Education Center in Seoul.


Hangul Scholar Goroo Lee Geuk-ro to Hold Academic Symposium in Seoul

This academic symposium is hosted by the citizen group Dongnip and supported by the Goru Lee Geuk-ro Memorial Association (1893?1978, Uiryeong, Gyeongnam) and Uiryeong County.


It highlights the lives of activists from the Joseon Language Society from Uiryeong County, Gyeongnam, and examines the significance and current status of the establishment of the National Korean Language Dictionary Museum in Uiryeong County to honor them.


This year marks the 577th anniversary of the promulgation of Hunminjeongeum and the 130th birth anniversary of Mr. Lee Geuk-ro. This academic symposium is an opportunity to review the life and achievements of Mr. Lee, who was a core figure in the Joseon Language Society movement for the independence of the Korean language and script, and who led the standardization and dissemination of the Korean language after liberation to the extent that he was called ‘Nam Choi Hyun-bae, Buk Lee Geuk-ro’ (South Choi Hyun-bae, North Lee Geuk-ro).


The first topic of the symposium is , with presentations and discussions led by Kim Seul-ong, Director of the Sejong Korean Language and Culture Institute, and Heo Jae-young, Professor at Dankook University. The presentation highlights Lee Geuk-ro’s research on Hunminjeongeum through phonetics.


The second topic, , will be presented and discussed by Park Yong-gyu, Research Fellow at the Institute for Korean National Studies, and Kim Yong-dal, former Director of the Korean Independence Movement Research Institute. The necessity of awarding honors to Joseon Language Society independence activists, including Lee Geuk-ro who have not yet been recognized, will be emphasized.


The third topic, , will be presented and discussed by Kim Bok-geun, Co-Chair of the National Korean Language Dictionary Museum Establishment Promotion Committee, and Cha Min-a, CEO of Hangul.com.
