Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon swam across and ran along the Han River with 450 citizens.

On the 8th, Mayor Oh participated in the '2023 Han River Renaissance Festival Aquathlon Competition' held at Jamsil Hangang Park and the Submerged Weir area.

Known as a triathlon enthusiast, Mayor Oh challenged the 'Challenge Course,' which involved swimming 750 meters and running 5 kilometers in cool weather and river breeze.

Wearing a wetsuit and entering the Han River, Mayor Oh experienced leg cramps at the 400-meter mark and was unable to complete the swimming course, but he finished the subsequent 5-kilometer run, successfully completing the event.

After the race, Mayor Oh said, "I will build more stamina and complete the course next year," and spent time communicating with citizens by taking photos with them after the event.

Earlier, Mayor Oh expressed his ambition to create landmarks symbolizing the city throughout the Han River, connecting the downtown area and waterfront to improve citizens' access to green spaces and performance venues, aiming to make the Han River a world-class tourist attraction.

Having participated twice in international triathlon competitions, Mayor Oh is known to have shown interest in aquathlon events held on the Han River. This year, he completed a 10km course in a marathon held in Seoul, showcased bicycle riding at the 'Seoul Bicycle Parade' event, and ran with citizens around Gwanghwamun during the 'Seoul Running Crew' event.

Despite his busy schedule, Mayor Oh has maintained strict physical fitness by commuting on foot from the mayoral residence in Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu to City Hall. In his congratulatory speech on this day, he said, "450 participants registered for this year's competition, and I hope the number will double or triple next year, making this event a great opportunity for Seoul citizens to take more pride in the Han River." He added, "We will continue to invest and implement new policies so that everyone can enjoy and use the Han River more joyfully, stylishly, and frequently."

He continued, "Since many events and festivals will be held around Nodeul Island, Yeouido, and various Han River parks in October, I hope all citizens will enjoy them together."

The 2023 Han River Renaissance Festival Aquathlon Competition, held from October 7 to 8, is hosted by the Seoul Triathlon Association and supported by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Seoul Sports Council. The event is divided into Safety Course (Group A fin swimming 900m, Group B fin swimming 1.8km), Challenge Course (swimming 750m, running 5km), and Miracle Course (swimming 1.5km, running 10km).
