The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on the 6th (local time) that this year's Nobel Peace Prize winner is Iranian human rights activist Mohammadi. The committee added that "Mohammadi has fought against the oppression of women in Iran and worked to promote human rights and freedom for all people."
Mohammadi is the 19th woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize among all past laureates. She is also the second Iranian women's rights activist to receive the Nobel Peace Prize since Shirin Ebadi in 2003.
According to the Nobel Committee, Mohammadi has been arrested 13 times and convicted 5 times by the Iranian regime. She is currently imprisoned and will receive the award while incarcerated. The Nobel Committee urged Iran to release Mohammadi, expressing hope for her freedom following the award.
