Discussion on Greenhouse Gas Reduction Strategies in the Livestock Sector
Suncheon National University (President Lee Byung-woon) announced that it will co-host the "International Symposium on Smart Livestock and Animal Microbiome for Carbon Neutrality" on the 13th at the 2023 Suncheon Bay Ecological Education Center, together with the Korean Society of Animal Science and Technology, Jeollanam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services, and the Smart Farm R&D Project Group.
This symposium is a forum to discuss greenhouse gas reduction strategies in the livestock sector to achieve carbon neutrality, with international experts in smart livestock and animal microbiome fields attending. Representatives from Ireland, the United States, the Netherlands, Japan, Australia, Canada, and Korea will present various greenhouse gas reduction strategies from their respective countries.
According to the National Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report (2022), greenhouse gas emissions from the livestock sector mainly originate from enteric fermentation and livestock manure, accounting for 1.5% of the total national emissions. However, due to the continuous increase in livestock numbers, emissions from the livestock sector are expected to rise as well, necessitating strategies to manage and reduce these emissions.
The symposium will introduce European carbon reduction measures, smart livestock technologies, precision feeding management methods, and animal microbiome technologies, providing an opportunity to explore various practical applications for farms.
Professor Lee Sang-seok of Suncheon National University, who planned and prepared the symposium and serves as the Senior Vice President of the Korean Society of Animal Science and Technology, stated, "We must understand the carbon neutrality strategies of advanced countries in the livestock sector and proactively engage in future livestock technology and policy research by establishing a sustainable livestock environment suited to domestic conditions and low-carbon livestock policies, turning the significant challenge of achieving carbon neutrality into an opportunity."
Meanwhile, this international symposium and academic conference held in Suncheon City alongside the Suncheon Bay International Agriculture Expo is expected to be an important event where domestic and international experts gather to discuss carbon reduction strategies and consider application methods under the theme of carbon neutrality in the livestock sector.
