Gangdong Prehistoric Culture Festival Takes First Step Toward Globalization as Gangdong-gu and Korea Tourism Organization Join Hands

Collaboration with Korea Tourism Organization to Provide Festival Information for Foreigners and Promote Globally... First Step for Gangdong Seonsa Cultural Festival to Become a World-Class Festival Beyond Korea

Gangdong Prehistoric Culture Festival Takes First Step Toward Globalization as Gangdong-gu and Korea Tourism Organization Join Hands

Gangdong-gu (District Mayor Lee Soo-hee) has joined hands with the Korea Tourism Organization to promote the ‘28th Gangdong Prehistoric Culture Festival’.

The Gangdong Prehistoric Culture Festival, held for three days from October 13 to 15 at the Amsa-dong archaeological site area (875 Olympic-ro, Gangdong-gu, Seoul), is a representative festival of Gangdong-gu with a long history in Seoul, having been first held in 1996 and now celebrating its 28th edition this year.

In particular, the Amsa-dong archaeological site, where the festival takes place, is a nationally representative Neolithic site that preserves the lifestyle and artistic culture of prehistoric people well. It was designated as Historic Site No. 267 in 1979, recognizing its value as a historically important location.

Accordingly, the district plans to collaborate with the Korea Tourism Organization to lay the foundation for the ‘Gangdong Prehistoric Culture Festival,’ which imaginatively depicts the lives of prehistoric people who lived in the Neolithic era, to grow beyond Korea and become a world-class festival.

The Korea Tourism Organization will continuously provide information about the ‘Gangdong Prehistoric Culture Festival’ to its overseas branches to develop travel packages for visiting the festival. In October, it plans to invite overseas travel industry officials or include major Gangdong-gu tourist sites such as the Gangdong Prehistoric Culture Festival in inspection tours to support the actual attraction of foreign visitors. Additionally, marketing campaigns targeting domestic tourists will be conducted to raise awareness of tourism in Gangdong-gu.

Furthermore, promotion of the ‘Bawijeol Village Hosangnori,’ designated as Seoul City Intangible Cultural Property No. 10, will also be carried out. The ‘Bawijeol Village Hosangnori’ is a precious traditional cultural asset of Gangdong-gu, showcased annually during the Gangdong Prehistoric Culture Festival. On September 26, a special reenactment event was held for about one hundred attendees, including mayors of member cities and representatives of partner companies who visited for the ‘6th World Smart City Organization (WeGO) General Assembly’ held in Seoul. Moving forward, new multilingual promotional content will be produced to more widely share Korea’s unique traditional culture with the world, and it will be listed on domestic and international promotional channels operated by the Korea Tourism Organization.

Lee Soo-hee, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, stated, “Through successful collaboration with the Korea Tourism Organization, which is dedicated to the development of Korea’s cultural tourism, we will enhance the regional brand value of Gangdong-gu and do our best to grow our district into a representative cultural city of Korea.”
