Mokpo Coast Guard Conducts Good Carbon Blue Carbon Promotion and Education

Lecture on Marine Environment Conservation for 233 Students at Mokpo Seobu Elementary School

Mokpo Maritime Police Station (Chief Kim Hae-cheol) conducted lectures on the practice of protecting blue carbon resources and marine environment conservation for 233 elementary school students in the jurisdiction.

According to Mokpo Maritime Police, on the 26th of last month and the 5th of this month, a total of two sessions were held for 233 fifth and sixth graders at Mokpo Seobu Elementary School, explaining the importance of marine environment conservation and the practice of protecting blue carbon resources amid worsening pollution.

'Blue carbon' refers to the absorption of carbon dioxide, one of the greenhouse gases causing global warming, by coastal marine ecosystems such as tidal flats, eelgrass beds, and salt marsh plants.

According to the United Nations (UN) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), marine ecosystems absorb carbon dioxide (green carbon) through photosynthesis about 50 times faster than terrestrial ecosystems like trees and forests, and can store carbon for thousands of years.

Since Mokpo Maritime Police oversees the tidal flats of the West Coast, an important blue carbon resource capable of absorbing 2.6 million tons of carbon dioxide annually, they took the lead in educating children, who will be responsible for the next generation, about marine environment conservation to promote a clean marine environment.

The educational content included △ understanding the meaning of blue carbon, an important resource to prevent global warming △ rules for protecting blue carbon resources △ the role of the maritime police in marine environment conservation △ creating four-line acrostic poems related to marine environment preservation terms, providing fun and engaging education for children.

A representative of Mokpo Maritime Police said, “We sincerely hope that this marine environment conservation education served as an opportunity for children, the future guardians of the sea, to appreciate the importance of the marine environment and take an interest in its preservation.”
