Ulsan Ulju-gun has been selected for the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's disaster prevention project competition, securing 31.5 billion KRW in national funding.
The selected projects are two: the "Seosaeng District Comprehensive Flood and Storm Disaster Living Zone Improvement Project" and the "Eonyang Mudong District Natural Disaster Risk Improvement District Maintenance Project."
The Comprehensive Flood and Storm Disaster Living Zone Improvement Project consolidates maintenance projects from various ministries such as the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and the Ministry of Environment under the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, aiming to fundamentally and step-by-step improve disaster risk factors in areas where disasters frequently occur.
Earlier, in March, Ulju-gun applied for the Seosaeng District, located in Ongok 1-gu and 2-gu villages in Myeongsan-ri, Seosaeng-myeon, as a target area for the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's new competition project. This area has been classified as a disaster-vulnerable zone urgently needing disaster prevention projects due to frequent flooding caused by heavy rain and typhoon invasions.
Following the selection, the Seosaeng District will invest a total of 42 billion KRW, including 21 billion KRW in national funds and 10.5 billion KRW each from city and county funds, to carry out disaster prevention projects.
Starting with detailed design services next year, the project will be implemented over five years, including 1.9 km of Hwasancheon stream, installation of two drainage pump stations and retention basins, and 2.2 km of new stormwater pipelines to prevent flood damage.
The Eonyang Mudong District, selected for the Natural Disaster Risk Improvement District Maintenance Project, frequently experiences flooding due to poor drainage caused by rising water levels of the Taehwa River, resulting in frequent property damage and risks to residents' safety.
Ulju-gun requested the Ministry of the Interior and Safety to designate the Mudong village area in Gusu-ri, Eonyang-eup, as a Natural Disaster Risk Improvement District, and after related consultations and on-site inspections, it was finally selected as a new project for next year.
Accordingly, the Mudong District will invest a total of 21 billion KRW, including 10.5 billion KRW in national funds and 5.25 billion KRW each from city and county funds, over four years starting with detailed design services next year. The project will include the installation of high-ground drainage channels, drainage pump stations, and retention basins.
Lee Soon-geol, the governor of Ulju-gun, said, "We were able to achieve good results by actively responding to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's competition review and on-site inspection together with local residents," adding, "We will do our utmost to promote disaster prevention projects so that residents can live safely without worry from natural disasters."
