The toll for Yeongjong Bridge, which connects Yeongjongdo Island, home to Incheon International Airport, and the mainland, will be significantly reduced starting from the 2nd.
Incheon City announced that the toll at the Incheon Airport Tollgate on Yeongjong Bridge (for small vehicles) will be lowered from 6,600 won to 3,200 won for the upper road, and from 3,200 won to 1,900 won for the lower road, effective from midnight on the 2nd. Additionally, residents of Yeongjongdo and nearby islands will be able to use Yeongjong Bridge and Incheon Bridge toll-free.
Earlier, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport signed a revised implementation agreement last month with Shin Airport Highway, the operator of the Incheon International Airport Expressway, to reduce the tolls on Yeongjong Bridge.
The toll reduction for Yeongjong Bridge was originally scheduled to take effect on this day according to the agreement, but due to the government's plan to waive expressway tolls during the Chuseok holiday period (September 28 to October 1), it will effectively be applied from the 2nd.
The toll for Incheon Bridge, another bridge connecting Yeongjongdo and the mainland, is expected to be reduced from 5,500 won to 2,000 won by the end of 2025.
The tolls for Yeongjong Bridge and Incheon Bridge, which are privately financed roads, have been more than twice as expensive as those for expressways operated with national funds, causing continuous dissatisfaction among users.
In August 2018, the government announced a toll management roadmap to reduce tolls on private expressways to levels similar to those of publicly funded expressways, but toll reductions for Yeongjong Bridge and Incheon Bridge had not been realized.
The government plans for Korea Expressway Corporation and Incheon International Airport Corporation to jointly invest in Incheon and Yeongjong Bridges, and for public institutions to operate them after the project period ends to recover the investment. The private expressway project period ends in December 2030 for Yeongjong Bridge and in October 2039 for Incheon Bridge.
Incheon Research Institute, a think tank of Incheon City, analyzed that due to changes in the toll system for Yeongjong Bridge and Incheon Bridge, an economic effect amounting to 5.5 trillion won and employment inducement effect of 20,000 jobs will occur over 16 years from October this year until the end of 2039.
