Antibiotic Injection That Can Cause Shock
Prosecutors "Cannot Explain Cause of Death"
A nurse who was on trial after a patient died following an antibiotic injection was later revealed to have taken an extreme step.
On the 30th, according to the court and police, Judge Min-gu Lee of the Criminal Division 3, Namyangju Branch of Uijeongbu District Court, dismissed the indictment against Nurse A, who was charged last month with involuntary manslaughter.
In December 2019, Nurse A administered an antibiotic injection to a patient while working at a general hospital. The next day, Mr. B, who was scheduled to be discharged after cataract surgery, fell into a coma after receiving the injection and eventually died.
The National Forensic Service's autopsy revealed that antibiotic components capable of causing shock were detected in Mr. B. Based on the autopsy results, the bereaved family filed a complaint. The prosecution investigated the doctors and nurses present at the hospital at the time as witnesses and confirmed that Nurse A administered the injection to Mr. B.
Nurse A stated, "I only administered the injection; I did not prepare the injection solution." In January, the prosecution concluded that Nurse A was solely responsible and indicted only her. Nurse A appeared at the first trial in June but did not attend the second trial. The court confirmed Nurse A's death and dismissed the prosecution's case.
According to Yonhap News Agency, a prosecution official said, "It has been confirmed that Nurse A took an extreme step," adding, "We cannot disclose the circumstances of the death."
