Military and Medical Training Manuals Also Use 28GHz Band I-eum 5G

Ministry of Science and ICT Allocates Newgens and KT MOS to Northern Region

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 25th that it has completed the frequency allocation procedure for Ieum 5G (5G specialized network) to Newgens and KT MOS North.

Newgens and KT MOS North are operators who have previously been allocated Ieum 5G frequencies. They plan to utilize the 28 GHz band Ieum 5G, which enables ultra-high-speed transmission of large-capacity data and connection of a large number of terminals, to promote the establishment of converged services in military education, medical education, and research and development (R&D). With this allocation, two new Ieum 5G service zones have been added, bringing the total number of Ieum 5G service providers in Korea to 24 institutions across 42 locations.

Newgens plans to build Ieum 5G converged services in two locations using the 28 GHz band. First, at the military training experience center within Daedeok University in Daejeon, they will provide military (combat training) education services based on immersive virtual and augmented reality using the 28 GHz band. This education consists of multi-party collaborative combat at squad and platoon levels, drone, mortar, anti-aircraft weapon disassembly, assembly, operation, and combat. It utilizes the characteristics of 5G 28 GHz to provide high-definition video in real time to multiple devices. Additionally, Newgens plans to establish a performance testing site (testbed) for Ieum 5G equipment and terminals, intelligent factories, and immersive services at the R&D verification center located in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province. Newgens stated that through this allocation, they aim to target the immersive education market while securing their competitive edge in Ieum 5G technology.

KT MOS North previously established immersive medical professional education services such as remote collaborative surgery using the 28 GHz band Ieum 5G at Samsung Seoul Hospital last year. This time, they plan to actively utilize the 28 GHz band Ieum 5G for ward rounds education targeting medical students by expanding the service areas to pediatric and adolescent wards, ophthalmology and otolaryngology wards, and urology professors' offices. This is expected to improve the level of medical education based on high-definition video and is anticipated to expand further to in-hospital and collaborative hospital consultations in the future.

Choi Woo-hyuk, Director of the Radio Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, “This frequency allocation is meaningful as it responds to the demand from the military and medical education sectors, which require multi-party real-time high-definition video transmission, by utilizing our companies’ technology with 5G 28 GHz.” He added, “We will actively support the gradual expansion of 28 GHz Ieum 5G into various fields of ultra-high-speed, ultra-connected converged services.”
