"Thought They Were Well-Off"... Five Family Members Found Dead in Three Locations (Comprehensive)

According to the Songpa Police Station in Seoul on the 23rd, a report was received at around 7:29 a.m. that a woman in her 40s, Ms. A, had fallen from an apartment in Jamsil-dong, Songpa-gu. Ms. A was found in a state of cardiac arrest and was taken to the hospital but ultimately passed away. It was confirmed that Ms. A’s maternal home was in the same apartment.

During the investigation of Ms. A’s case, four other family members were found dead. The husband, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law were found deceased in a villa in Songpa-gu, and the teenage daughter was found dead in a hotel in Gimpo, Gyeonggi Province. A resident of the villa said, “They drove a nice car, so I thought they were well off. They said they were planning to move to a better house,” and added, “About two weeks ago, they put out their belongings, so I thought they were leaving, but I overheard relatives saying they had been scammed.”

The police discovered a will believed to have been written by the husband and sister-in-law. It reportedly contained content about conflicts within the family over debt and credit issues. It was also confirmed that Ms. A had stayed at the Gimpo hotel with her daughter the day before and left the hotel alone that morning. The exact cause of the daughter’s death will be determined through an autopsy.

The police suspect that four family members, excluding the daughter, took their own lives. They are currently investigating the exact cause and circumstances of death and are also examining any connections between the deaths.
