Gumi-si Opens 'Gongjeong Innovation Simulation Center' ... Gyeongbuk's First Supercomputer-Based Facility

Providing Customized Digital Solutions for Businesses

On the 22nd, Gumi City in Gyeongbuk held an opening ceremony for the ‘Gyeongbuk Gumi Process Innovation Simulation Center’ at the GERI Multipurpose Hall to provide customized digital solutions to companies.

The ceremony was attended by about 100 people, including National Assembly member Kim Young-sik, Park Jong-won, Policy Officer of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Kwon Ki-yong, Executive Director of Korea Industrial Complex Corporation, Kwak Ho-sang, President of Kumoh National Institute of Technology, provincial and city council members, related organizations, and company officials.

The opening ceremony included an introduction to the Process Innovation Simulation Center, a progress report, awards for contributors, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and a center walking tour.

Since its inception in 2021, the ‘Gyeongbuk Gumi Process Innovation Simulation Center’ has provided convergent simulation services to local companies, significantly shortening the development and prototype production periods for materials, parts, and equipment in the electrical/electronic fields. In particular, in 2022, it supported 41 companies, achieving remarkable results such as reducing average development costs by approximately 100 million KRW and shortening development time by 4 months.

This year, the center established Gyeongbuk’s top-level supercomputing system equipped with 13 commercial software packages (equivalent to about 3,000 general PCs). Additionally, six types of equipment supporting prototype production were added, completing preparations as a core base for digital transformation. Utilizing the secured infrastructure, the center plans to provide high-performance simulation services to 51 companies this year.

Moreover, over two years, in collaboration with Kumoh National Institute of Technology, a participating institution, 430 practical experts capable of interpreting simulations have been trained. Adding this year’s target of 90 more, over 520 experts will have been produced, expected to help alleviate the shortage of highly skilled personnel in companies.

Woo Byung-gu, Director of the Gumi Electronics and Information Technology Institute, stated, “With this supercomputer-based process innovation simulation support infrastructure, we will actively support small and medium-sized enterprises in the Gumi National Industrial Complex to minimize trial and error in new product development and reduce manufacturing costs, enabling them to grow into global strong small and medium enterprises. We will also strive to discover linked projects to improve accessibility to corporate support services in the future.”

Mayor Kim Jang-ho said, “The first supercomputer-based corporate support simulation center in Gyeongbuk will be a key asset leading the digital transformation of the Gumi National Industrial Complex. We expect significant synergy effects by linking it with major projects such as the defense innovation cluster and semiconductor specialized complex that the city has attracted.”
