Hanwha Ocean is accelerating the development of liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2) carriers, an eco-friendly ship technology led by overseas companies.
On the 21st, Hanwha Ocean announced that it has signed a Joint Industry Project (JIP) agreement with Greece's Ecolog, the US ABS classification society, and Scotland's Babcock LGE (Liquid Gas Equipment) to develop a large 40,000㎥ liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2) carrier.
They plan to share specialized technology and experience related to carbon dioxide carriers and create detailed designs and specifications for large liquefied carbon dioxide carriers that ensure safety and efficiency.
They will also review key issues related to ship operation and study ways to minimize greenhouse gas emissions during operation. Various purities of carbon dioxide will be examined to develop an optimal carrier reflecting the latest technology.
Hanwha Ocean, leading this collaboration, will oversee comprehensive reviews of ship propulsion performance and detailed design work for the ship, including the cargo tanks, which are core to liquefied carbon dioxide carriers.
Ecolog provides global industry requirements and ship operation know-how related to liquefied carbon dioxide carriers. As a group company of the Greek shipping firm Gaslog, it specializes in carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) including ship operations.
The US ABS society is responsible for reviewing variables according to carbon dioxide purity and examining and approving regulations related to overall design specifications. Babcock LGE, a specialist in cargo handling system development, assists with design and development work related to cargo handling systems, including reliquefaction units.
A Hanwha Ocean official said, "Through joint research, the company will complete the development of liquefied carbon dioxide carriers with optimal performance to secure a competitive edge in this technology field. Having been recognized for unrivaled technology and high quality in the liquefied gas carrier market, we will maintain our position as a leader in this sector as well."
