Selected by UK William Reed... 21 Locations in Europe, 18 in Asia
Famous Korean Hotels Marriott and Hilton Not Included
The Pasalaqua Hotel, which opened last June on the shores of Lake Como in Moltrasio, northern Italy, was selected as the world's best hotel. South Korea was not selected among the world's top 50 hotels.
According to major foreign media including CNN on the 19th (local time), the Pasalaqua Hotel took first place at the '2023 World's 50 Best Hotels' awards ceremony held by British media company William Reed at the Guildhall in London, UK.
The Pasalaqua Hotel is a five-star hotel converted from an 18th-century mansion once owned by Count Andrea Lucini Pasalaqua.
Built in 1787, this mansion is known to have hosted famous figures such as French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Italy's representative opera composer Vincenzo Bellini.
The mansion was acquired by the Grand Hotel Tremezzo in 2018, and after more than three years of extensive renovations, it reopened last June.
The Pasalaqua Hotel, which has a total of 24 rooms, reportedly charges a minimum of $1,800 (about 2.38 million KRW) per night for stays during the following summer, according to the media.
Following the Pasalaqua Hotel, Asian hotels such as Rosewood Hong Kong, Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River, The Upper House in Hong Kong, and Aman Tokyo ranked within the top five.
The La Mamounia Hotel in Marrakech, Morocco, where a major earthquake occurred on the 8th, ranked sixth.
Among the world's top 50 hotels, 21 were European hotels. Next were 18 from Asia, 6 from North America, 3 from Africa, and one each from Oceania and South America.
The United States had only two hotels on the list, Aman New York (25th) and Equinox (48th), with no other hotels named. South Korea also was not selected among the world's top 50 hotels.
Global hotel brands Marriott and Hilton did not win any awards.
Meanwhile, William Reed, which hosted this awards ceremony, has been famous since 2002 for annually selecting and announcing the world's top 50 restaurants under the title 'World's 50 Best Restaurants.'
This ranking is recognized globally alongside the Michelin Guide, the world's most prestigious restaurant evaluation book.
However, this is the first time William Reed has ranked hotels. Based on votes from 580 judges who stayed at hotels over the past year and voted multiple times, the world's top 50 hotels were selected.
