Prevent Violent Crimes!...Gwanak-gu Significantly Expands CCTV Coverage

Gwanak-gu (District Mayor Park Jun-hee) is making every effort to create an environment where residents can live with peace of mind by preparing a "Comprehensive Plan for the Prevention of Violent Crimes."

They are focusing on alleviating residents' anxiety by strengthening on-site patrols first, including operating forest path safety guards composed of retired police officers, enhancing joint patrols between the public, private sectors, and police, and expanding the Safe Return Home Scouts.

Along with strengthening on-site patrols, they have also begun expanding facilities for crime prevention. First, within this year, they plan to install 168 crime prevention CCTV units across 90 locations in vulnerable and blind spot areas.

In particular, for park and hiking trail sections within 500 meters of accident sites where CCTV has not been installed, installation locations will be prioritized through police consultation and reflecting residents' opinions, with 24 units (18 intelligent, 6 black box cameras) at 12 locations to be installed by October.

A full survey for CCTV installation targeting parks and hiking trails has also commenced. A consultative body consisting of CCTV experts, neighborhood leaders, police substations, and Gwanak Police Station CPOs (Crime Prevention Officers) is conducting the survey, and priority will be given to urgent areas for installation.

Based on the results of the full survey of parks and hiking trails, the goal is to install 556 CCTV units (459 intelligent, 97 black box cameras) at 250 locations by 2024, and 70 units (30 intelligent, 40 black box cameras) at 50 locations by 2025. Emergency bells will also be installed alongside each intelligent CCTV, totaling 169 emergency bells.

Additionally, each neighborhood has formed a "Neighborhood Crime Blind Spot Investigation Consultative Body" to install CCTV and security lights in vulnerable areas. The neighborhood consultative body is composed of residents' autonomy committee members familiar with the area, neighborhood leaders, police substations, and volunteer crime prevention members, analyzing vulnerable areas and selecting installation locations according to the characteristics of each neighborhood.

Following the priority selection results of the neighborhood consultative bodies, 1,000 intelligent CCTV units will be installed at 200 locations by 2024, and a total of 300 security lights will be expanded and upgraded.

Intelligent CCTV is a system that automatically detects specific movements such as violence or collapse, allowing control room operators to immediately verify and provide assistance. The district plans to expand intelligent CCTV to 2,368 units at 530 locations by 2027, operating a total of 8,008 units at 2,293 locations.

Currently, the CCTV in the area is linked and operated with the control center, where 16 control operators monitor in real-time 24/7 in four teams on three shifts to protect residents' safety. As CCTV expands, control personnel will also be reinforced. To strengthen real-time crime response and detailed monitoring, 16 additional personnel will be added by 2027.

Meanwhile, the district is expanding the operation of the "Gwanaksan Forest Path National Point Number" system to provide accurate location guidance in case of emergencies. A total of 294 national point number location signs will be installed along the Gwanaksan forest paths (23 routes, 77.8 km), placing them approximately every 200 meters along the hiking trails.

District Mayor Park Jun-hee said, "We have newly established the '365 Life Safety Team' dedicated to life safety tasks and are making every effort to implement a comprehensive plan for crime prevention, including significantly strengthening on-site patrols. As the district mayor, I bear a heavy responsibility and will do my best to restore peaceful daily life to our residents."
