Korea Forest Service National Arboretum Holds 20th Anniversary Ceremony for Forest Biological Specimen Hall Opening

The Korea National Arboretum (Director Choi Young-tae) announced that it will hold a ceremony on Wednesday, September 20, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the opening of the Forest Biological Specimen Hall at the National Arboretum.


At this commemorative ceremony, three individuals who contributed to the research on domestic forest biodiversity and the development of the specimen hall were selected and honored for their achievements. Professor Emeritus Oh Byung-woon of Chungbuk National University laid the foundation for national plant management by publishing the distribution map of vascular plants endemic to the Korean Peninsula and Korean vascular plants, and donated over 80,000 domestic and international plant specimens collected throughout his lifetime. Professor Emeritus Han Ho-yeon of Yonsei University donated over 90,000 insect specimens and more than 1,500 ancient documents, and was recognized for his contributions to the classification system of fruit fly species both domestically and internationally, as well as for controlling invasive insects in the field of forest entomology. Additionally, Professor Heo Jae-seon of Suncheon National University, the leading authority in the field of domestic lichens, donated over 40,000 lichen specimens and about 200 type specimens, greatly contributing to the development of the Forest Biological Specimen Hall.

Director Choi Young-tae of the National Arboretum stated, “Specimens hold important value beyond simply being observed and recorded.” He added, “Through the donated forest biological specimens and literature, we plan to explore numerous unknown pieces of information and attempt various research.”


Furthermore, the Forest Museum hosted the 『20th Anniversary International Symposium on the Forest Biological Specimen Hall』 starting at 1 p.m. that day, where domestic and international experts exchanged diverse opinions on the importance of managing and preserving forest biological specimens and sought future development plans for specimen research.
