Carnivorous Fish Blue Shark Can Cause Human Injury
Leaps Above Water Surface Multiple Times Before Falling Onto Boat
A large blue shark, known as the 'man-eating shark,' was caught in the sea off Homigot, Nam-gu, Pohang-si, Gyeongbuk, drawing attention.
According to the fishing boat Daeseongho registered in Pohang on the 19th, a blue shark was caught on a fishing line while fishing for Spanish mackerel about 2 km off Homigot, Pohang, on the 17th.
The shark caught on the fishing line that day was over 3 meters long and weighed more than 200 kg. After being hooked, the blue shark jumped onto the boat. Captain Kim Daesung described the situation, saying, "I thought I had caught a yellowtail, but suddenly a large shark jumped out of the water, which was very surprising."
Usually, blue sharks bite the Spanish mackerel caught on the fishing line or bite the bait and run away. Even if they bite the fishing line, they dive deep into the sea to cut the line or jump out of the water to release the line and escape.

However, the fisherman whose bait was bitten by the shark that day struggled with the shark so hard that the fishing rod bent and broke. The shark jumped out of the water several times before falling onto the Daeseongho.
After hitting the upper part of the wheelhouse and falling onto the deck, the shark bit the boat with its teeth and struck the hull and tail against the boat. During this process, the Daeseongho's funnel, solar panels, glass, hydraulic lines, electric wires, and speakers were damaged.
Captain Kim said, "The shark struggled for a long time, then lay still as if dead, but after about 10 minutes, it struggled again. If I had approached thinking it was dead, a serious accident could have happened. Just thinking about it now is terrifying."

The blue shark is a carnivorous fish that preys on herring, tuna, and other sharks, and can cause fatal harm to humans. Recently, blue sharks have been frequently appearing in the sea off Pohang.
Earlier, on July 10, a fishing boat operating off Homigot-myeon discovered a shark caught in its net. This individual was presumed to be a blue shark, but the exact species was not confirmed.
On the 21st of the same month, a 24-ton fishing boat found a dead shark caught in its net about 4.6 km east of Cheongjin 3-ri, Buk-gu, and reported it to the coast guard. Investigation confirmed that this shark was a female blue shark measuring 3.28 meters in length and 1.56 meters in girth. On the 8th of the same month, a fishing boat captain also spotted a blue shark off Guman Port, Nam-gu.
