Gyeonggi Province is joining forces with Jeju Special Self-Governing Province to promote carbon neutrality policies. They also agreed to jointly address current issues such as fostering the bioindustry utilizing the natural resources of the two regions and the problem of contaminated water discharge from the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan.
On the 18th, Gyeonggi Province signed a win-win cooperation agreement on nine tasks with the Governor of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province at the Gyeonggi Provincial Office.
At the signing ceremony, Gyeonggi Governor Kim Dong-yeon said, "Shortly after my term began, I mentioned a win-win agreement called ‘Gyeongje Saligi’ (Economic Revival) by combining the ‘Gyeong’ from Gyeonggi and the ‘Je’ from Jeju. Today, we see the fruition of that. I hope we do not just sign on carbon neutrality and contaminated water issues but engage in practical cooperation. It doesn’t have to be grand; if Jeju and Gyeonggi start with small things together, we can achieve bigger things later."
Jeju Governor Oh Young-hoon responded, "Jeju is making efforts to foster new industries in energy fields such as green hydrogen buses and in the space industry with the establishment of a space center. In times like these, I believe the roles of Gyeonggi and Jeju in revitalizing the economy are necessary. I also want to express my gratitude as Gyeonggi residents are the largest contributors to Jeju’s Hometown Love Donation Program. That will be a great driving force in protecting Jeju’s environment and making Jeju sustainable."
On the same day, Gyeonggi Province and Jeju agreed on nine items including ▲policy exchange in carbon neutrality and climate tech fields ▲joint response to Fukushima nuclear power plant contaminated water discharge ▲mutual cooperation to activate the Hometown Love Donation Program ▲fostering (Scale-Up) the bioindustry utilizing natural and clean resources ▲joint operation cooperation of an online marketplace for agricultural specialties ▲mutual supply cooperation of agricultural products for school meals ▲mutual cooperation in tourism branding projects ▲mutual cooperation in fostering and revitalizing the horse industry ▲activation of lifelong education and joint utilization of content.
According to the agreement, the two institutions will expand exchanges of excellent policies and related industries on carbon neutrality technology, culture, and renewable energy to respond to the climate crisis.
They will also actively respond to the discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant and focus on mutual promotion and system improvement to activate the Hometown Love Donation system.
Furthermore, the two regions will strive to discover customized cosmetics and natural product-based food, medicine, and medical materials using natural and clean resources, expand the scale of the bioindustry, and create various added values.
In addition, to revitalize the sales of local agricultural specialties, they will jointly operate an online marketplace for agricultural specialties and mutually supply agricultural products to establish an efficient eco-friendly school meal system. They will also cooperate on tourism branding projects to activate the tourism industry, foster and revitalize the horse industry, and promote lifelong education and joint use of content.
Since Governor Kim Dong-yeon’s inauguration in the 8th term of local government, Gyeonggi Province has signed win-win cooperation agreements with a total of five metropolitan local governments including Chungcheongnam-do, Jeollanam-do, Jeollabuk-do, Gwangju Metropolitan City, and now Jeju Province. In March, Gyeonggi held the Bay Valley Mega City seminar with Chungnam, and last month operated a youth exchange camp between Gyeonggi and Jeonbuk. On the 12th, through Market Gyeonggi, they sold Jeonnam specialties, demonstrating efforts for practical implementation beyond just agreements with metropolitan local governments.
