Jeonbuk Firefighter Off Duty Resting at Home
Heard Disturbance Outside Apartment, Went Out and Found Person to Rescue
No Response on 16th Floor, Moved to 15th Floor to Rescue Citizen
A firefighter off duty at home rescued a citizen who was about to jump from an apartment balcony, a story that has warmed society.
According to the Jeonbuk Fire Headquarters on the 18th, Nam Gi-yeop, a fire lieutenant living in an apartment in Songcheon-dong, Deokjin-gu, Jeonju, heard a commotion while resting at home on his day off around 6:50 a.m. on the 16th and looked outside.
Nam then spotted a woman in her 20s, Ms. A, hanging upside down outside the balcony on the 16th floor of the same apartment. At that time, Ms. A had about half of her body exposed outside, and blood was dripping from what appeared to be cuts caused by broken glass. Inside the apartment, someone seemed to be holding tightly onto her legs to prevent her from falling.
Explained the situation to the 15th floor and climbed up to rescue

Without hesitation, Nam pressed the doorbell of the apartment but received no response. He then went down to the lower floor. After explaining the situation to the resident below, he climbed up the balcony railing to the 16th floor and pushed Ms. A, who was hanging outside the balcony, back inside, successfully rescuing her.
Firefighters arrived afterward. Fortunately, Ms. A was reported to have no serious health issues.
Nam has been with the Jeonbuk Fire Headquarters since January 2008 and has spent 15 years extinguishing fires and rescuing lives on the scene.
Nam explained the situation, saying, "It is very difficult to remain hanging upside down at a high place for a long time, so I only thought about rescuing the woman as quickly as possible." He added, "Looking back, climbing from the 15th floor balcony railing to the 16th floor was quite dizzying." He continued, "Still, I am very relieved to have saved a precious life and will continue to do my best to save lives in the future."
Meanwhile, it is known that in 2021, while working at the Sunchang Fire Station, Nam witnessed smoke coming from Chilbong in Wansan, Jeonju, on his way home, reported it to 119, and helped firefighters extinguish the fire upon their arrival at the scene.
