A Healthy Breeze Blows in Gumi-si... Falling for the Charm of Nordic Walking

Seonsan Health Center in Gumi, Gyeongbuk, is operating the 2nd Nordic Walking Club at Seonsan High School, Gumibo, and other locations with about 50 participants until October 31.

A Healthy Breeze Blows in Gumi-si... Falling for the Charm of Nordic Walking Nordic Walking Club.

This program is held twice a week (a total of 17 sessions) during evening hours (6:30 PM to 7:30 PM). On the 5th, an orientation was held in the auditorium on the 2nd floor of Seonsan Health Center, followed by theoretical lectures. The first outdoor class (basic practice) was conducted at Seonsan High School with lectures and guidance from a certified Nordic walking instructor.

Nordic walking involves walking while holding Nordic sticks in both hands. Compared to regular walking, it increases heart rate by 12%, burns more than twice the calories, and is effective in reducing joint impact and correcting posture.

Analysis of pre- and post-body composition measurements of continuous participants from the 1st Nordic Walking Club held last March showed decreases of ▲1.2 in BMI ▲2.3% in body fat ▲3.1 cm in waist circumference. It was also found that completion rates were generally lower among participants from distant areas. Therefore, next year, the program will be expanded to Gangdong and Gangseo areas (3 locations) to increase citizen participation.

Kwon Jun-gyeong, director of Seonsan Health Center, said, “The Nordic walking class will help promote health by forming correct walking habits, and with the expanded operation next year, we will take the lead in creating a healthy Gumi City.”
