Rain Hastening Autumn, Lasting Until the Weekend... Cooler Weather from Next Week

Autumn rain that will send off the September heatwave is expected to continue across most regions nationwide until the weekend. Once the rain stops, temperatures will drop, bringing in the full arrival of autumn.

Rain Hastening Autumn, Lasting Until the Weekend... Cooler Weather from Next Week On the 15th, autumn rain is falling in most areas nationwide, including Seoul, where citizens are walking with umbrellas in Gwanghwamun. The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasted that until the weekend, there will be times when rain accompanied by gusts, thunder, and lightning will pour at a rate of 10 to 30 mm per hour. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration on the 15th, the weather will be mostly cloudy nationwide with occasional rain. The expected rainfall from the previous day through the 15th is forecasted to be 20 to 80 mm in the Gangwon Yeongdong region, with some areas recording over 100 mm. Additionally, southern Gyeonggi, central and southern Gangwon Yeongseo are expected to receive 10 to 60 mm, while northern Gangwon Yeongseo and Jeju Island are forecasted to get 10 to 40 mm. By the 16th, rainfall is expected to be 5 to 40 mm in the Seoul, Incheon, and northern Gyeonggi areas of the metropolitan region, and 5 to 20 mm in the five western islands.

This rain is due to a low-pressure system approaching from Shanghai, China, and easterly winds blowing from the East Coast. As summer ends, cold and dry air moves southward from the northwest, while subtropical high pressure in the southeast supplies warm moisture, causing a low-pressure system formed at the boundary between cold and warm air to slowly pass over the Korean Peninsula.

On the 16th, the low-pressure system including rain clouds will pass over the Korean Peninsula, bringing rain from the west. By evening, the entire inland area will be under the influence of the rain cloud band, with heavy rainfall expected at a rate of 20 to 40 mm per hour when it rains. The rain cloud band is expected to bring rain nationwide until the morning of the 17th, then move out to the East Sea in the afternoon, leading to a brief lull. However, due to the influence of a trough, rain may fall again mainly in the western part of the Korean Peninsula on the 18th and 19th.

After the rain stops, true autumn weather is expected to begin. The North Pacific high pressure is retreating, and cold air is gradually coming in from the north, causing morning temperatures to drop to around 18 degrees Celsius, signaling the start of cooler weather, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration. In particular, the minimum temperature on the 21st is forecasted to drop to 17 degrees Celsius in Seoul, the metropolitan area, as well as in Jeonju and Daejeon, with daytime maximum temperatures also expected to stay below 27 degrees Celsius.
