GS Caltex, First Refinery to Produce Biofuel for Ships... Pilot Operation Begins

Supply of Bio-Ship Fuel to HMM Container Ships

GS Caltex's ship fueled with bio marine fuel, the first of its kind made by a domestic oil refining company, is set to embark on a trial voyage.

On the 15th, GS Caltex announced that it will conduct a bio marine fuel trial operation with HMM at Busan New Port. On this day, at Pier 4 of Busan New Port, HMM's 6400 TEU-class container ship 'HMM Tacoma' will be refueled with GS Caltex's bio marine fuel 'B30 Bio Marine Fuel' and will operate on the Busan-Singapore-India-South America route.

GS Caltex is participating in the eco-friendly biofuel activation alliance launched by the government in October last year, playing a leading role in expanding the distribution of eco-friendly biofuels. On the 5th, it began a trial flight of bio aviation fuel (SAF) on a Korean Air cargo flight from Incheon Airport to Los Angeles.

Additionally, GS Caltex plans to continue supplying bio marine fuel to domestic and international shipping companies by participating in the bio marine fuel introduction plan led by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy until the end of December 2024.

Bio marine fuel is made using renewable raw materials, enabling a reduction of carbon emissions by more than 65% compared to conventional fossil fuel-based marine fuels. Bio marine fuel using waste cooking oil-based biodiesel is internationally recognized for achieving over 80% carbon emission reduction.

Moreover, it is cheaper than methanol or ammonia and can be used without new infrastructure investment or new shipbuilding, making it the most practical alternative for carbon reduction in the shipping sector. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) officially recognized the carbon reduction effect of bio marine fuel at the 80th Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC80) held in London last July.

GS Caltex's 'B30' product is manufactured by blending marine heavy oil with marine biodiesel produced from waste cooking oil by the domestic biofuel company DS Danseok. GS Caltex obtained the 'ISCC EU,' an international eco-friendly product certification system for biofuels, in August?the first domestic oil refining company to do so?and DS Danseok also holds the same certification, ensuring that the entire bio marine fuel supply chain is eco-certified.

Lee Seung-hoon, Vice President of GS Caltex, said, "We have produced bio marine fuel for the first time among domestic oil refining companies and started the first trial voyage." He added, "To reduce carbon emissions in the shipping sector, we plan to expand the supply of bio marine fuel not only to domestic shipping companies but also to global shipping companies refueling in Korean waters."
