Song Jae-kyung, a first-generation game developer in Korea known as the "Father of Lineage," is stepping down from his position as co-CEO of XL Games to focus on developing a new title.
XL Games announced that its founder, former CEO Song, resigned from his CEO position as of July 31, transitioning to a sole CEO system under Choi Kwan-ho.
In a message shared internally on the 8th, former CEO Song stated, "I am stepping back a bit from the CEO role to concentrate more on the development of 'ArcheAge 2.' Since CEO Choi Kwan-ho has already been effectively managing the business side, there will be little change in that area."
Song is a first-generation game developer who co-founded Nexon with the late Chairman Kim Jung-ju and participated in the early production of "Baram-ui Nara" (The Kingdom of the Winds). Later, he joined NCSoft and created "Lineage," which sparked the domestic MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) boom, earning him the title "Father of Lineage."
In 2003, he founded XL Games and released the MMORPG "ArcheAge" in 2013 as its flagship title. XL Games was acquired by Kakao Games in 2020, and in March of this year, it launched the mobile game "ArcheAge War."
Former CEO Song will remain as a director at XL Games and dedicate himself to producing the next project, "ArcheAge 2," which is currently in development with a planned release in 2024.
