Will Elicit Consensus on the Taste and Appeal
A unique promotion for the 2030 Busan World Expo bid using cooking was held under the theme ‘Delicious Expo Created by Edward Kwon and Metropolitan Area University Student Supporters.’
On the afternoon of the 9th, Busan City hosted the ‘Expo Cooking Show’ at the famous restaurant ‘Kitchen Maillard’ in Gangnam-gu, Seoul.
This event was designed to promote the 2030 Busan World Expo by showcasing recipes developed by the world-renowned culinary researcher Edward Kwon, who created dishes using Busan’s local ingredients to represent the flavors of the 2030 Busan World Expo, cooked together with metropolitan area university student supporters of the 2030 Busan World Expo.
The initiative was driven by a survey on ‘2030 Busan World Expo promotional participation content’ conducted among metropolitan area university student supporters of the 2030 Busan World Expo, which revealed that food-related content was the most popular.
Busan City directly invited Edward Kwon, a famous culinary researcher who is also Busan’s gourmet tourism ambassador and former executive chef of the Burj Al Arab, a 7-star hotel in Dubai, to participate in this event. Edward Kwon enthusiastically agreed to actively join in spreading the taste of the 2030 Busan World Expo worldwide, making the event possible.
The dishes presented at this ‘Expo Cooking Show’ consisted of four courses under the theme ‘Busan is Gourmet,’ featuring representative Busan ingredients such as Daejeo tomatoes, seaweed and kelp from Gijang.
The first course, named ‘Sweet 2030 Busan World Expo,’ featured ripe Daejeo tomatoes paired with hazelnut dressing, embodying the meaning of ‘sweet’ as the name suggests.
The following course, ‘Healthy 2030 Busan World Expo,’ consisted of orzo pasta with gently steamed abalone and Gijang seaweed, expressing Busan’s healthy ingredients through kelp from Gijang.
The main course, ‘Festival of the World 2030 Busan World Expo,’ was a tenderloin steak served with sweet potato pur?e from Yeongdo, symbolizing the hope for the Expo’s successful bid through a steak dish loved worldwide.
Finally, ‘Busan’s Representative Food 2030 Busan World Expo’ featured Busan seed hotteok and Nakdong seaweed ice scramble, marking a new starting point for Busan, South Korea, and reflecting on Busan’s iconic local foods to conclude the meal.
The four-course meal was further enriched by incorporating the results of a prior survey conducted among metropolitan area university student supporters of the 2030 Busan World Expo regarding foods made with ingredients that evoke the Expo, deepening the taste of the 2030 Busan World Expo.
The atmosphere and recipes from the event were posted on the YouTube channel ‘Edward Kwon Jipkok Jipcook,’ which has many subscribers, contributing further to spreading awareness and support for the 2030 Busan World Expo bid.
Considering that ‘Kitchen Maillard,’ where the event was held, is popular among the younger generation, the venue’s interior and exterior were decorated with promotional graphics for the 2030 Busan World Expo, attracting the attention of many citizens visiting over the weekend.
Inside the venue, bar tables, pillars, X-shaped banners, and photo zones were installed, and promotional videos were broadcast on a large screen.
Additionally, external facilities such as banners, the upper beam of the entrance, and lower wall surfaces were maximally utilized to naturally imprint the 2030 Busan World Expo on passersby.
Edward Kwon said, “The taste of the 2030 Busan World Expo is as dynamic, rich in flavor, and energetic as Busan’s history. I am very pleased to participate in promoting the Expo bid through dishes that reinterpret abundant local specialties and seafood.” He added, “This opportunity allowed me to fully understand the significance of the 2030 Busan World Expo bid, and I will do my best to incorporate this into various events to promote the Expo.”
Mayor Park Hyung-jun stated, “This event, which discovered recipes that well represent Busan’s history, geographical background, and the characteristics of the 2030 Busan World Expo and presented them through cooking, is expected to uniquely showcase Busan’s charm and the justification for hosting the Expo worldwide through the taste of the 2030 Busan World Expo, thereby further generating public support for the bid.”
