Kyungsung University Wins Award for 5 Consecutive Years at ‘KSAE Student Self-Built Car Competition’

The Department of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering at Kyungsung University participated in the largest domestic university student self-made car competition held in Gunsan, Jeonbuk from the 25th to the 27th of last month and won the bronze prize in the technology category.

The KSAE University Student Self-Made Car Competition is an annual event hosted by the Korean Society of Automotive Engineers. This year, 104 teams from 67 universities nationwide, totaling 2,300 participants, competed in three categories: BAJA (Off-Road), Formula (On-Road), and Technology Idea & Design.

The electric self-made car club of Kyungsung University's Department of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering has been emerging as a strong contender in the electric self-made car field in the Busan area, winning awards for five consecutive years since their first participation in 2019.

The department received a bronze prize in the technology design category in 2019, a silver prize in 2020, a gold prize in 2021, a silver prize in 2022, and a bronze prize in 2023. Additionally, they won the grand prize in the 3D experience special category for two consecutive years in 2020 and 2021.

The KSMC team (Kyungsung Univ. Self-Made Car Team) from the Department of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering, which participated in this competition, collaborated under the guidance of department professors in the 3D cloud space of 3D experience to generate ideas and perform conceptual design.

After independently designing and modeling the self-made car, they conducted fluid analysis for detailed design, verified it through 3D printing, and completed the overall shape.

The final designed vehicle, KS-EVO (Kyungsung-evolution of origin), was produced with support from the Ministry of Education’s LINC 3.0 project’s seasonal semester practical courses such as CAD and CAE, and the ‘Future Automotive Technology Convergence Innovative Talent Development Project Team.’

Lee Kyung-min, the KSMC team leader, said, “Although we faced considerable time and difficulties due to lack of practical experience, we were able to acquire diverse knowledge through this competition and learned that not only individual capabilities but also teamwork are equally important.”

Since July last year, the Department of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering at Kyungsung University, along with the Departments of Mechatronics and Energy Engineering, has been selected for the ‘Future Automotive Technology Convergence Innovative Talent Development Project,’ a ministry collaboration talent development project by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Ministry of Education, receiving a budget of over 1.7 billion KRW for 32 months until February 2025.

The department plans to nurture talent in digital lightweight design, autonomous driving systems, and xEV drive systems through industry-academia cooperation focused on practical work with related automotive companies.

With full support from the university, the department is equipped with related laboratories and equipment for electric vehicles and autonomous driving, leading talent development in future automotive fields such as mechanical engineering, autonomous driving, and electric vehicles through connected education of theory, experiments, and computational analysis within the IDEA education system.

To cultivate practical skills suitable for the 4th Industrial Revolution era, the department supports three major clubs (self-made car club, autonomous control club, drone club) and has achieved many results in various competitions, including awards in the electric self-made car category.
