Samsung Electronics President Kim Woo-jun: "Software-Based Networks Are Game Changers"

Need for Universal Platform 5G Customized Network

"Telecommunication networks will become the platform that determines the future. The most fundamental element is software (SW). Software-based networks will be the game changer."

Kim Woo-jun, President of Samsung Electronics' Network Business Division, emphasized the transition to software-based networks at the 'Mobile360 Asia Pacific (M360 APAC)' conference held on the 7th at the Westin Chosun Hotel in Jung-gu, Seoul.

President Kim explained that 5G functions as a universal platform beyond just a communication network. He said, "5G connects all people and things. It links tablet PCs and smartphones with TVs and is applied in various fields such as smart factories, logistics, and healthcare. Just as wireless networks became necessary when moving from wired to wireless phones, now various types of networks are needed." He added, "However, it is impossible to build all types of networks. The challenge is to build on-demand networks as needed. Samsung Networks believes that software is the most fundamental element." Previously, dedicated hardware was required for each function, but applying software to communication networks allows more functions to be implemented on servers through software.

President Kim stated, "The transition to software-based networks is happening now, not 10 or 20 years from now," and explained, "We have succeeded in building the largest-scale software-based network in North America, and in Europe, we are constructing purely software-centric networks."

He added, "Samsung provides reliable and stable operations based on 40 years of accumulated hardware network experience," and said, "We focus on research and development (R&D) and are a global leader in software-based networks that do not settle for the present." Furthermore, he revealed, "Samsung Network's slogan is 'We connect.' We will connect people and things everywhere."
