Special Exhibition 'Goryeo Ceramics - Sandohaedo and Juaedo Ceramics'
Pottery (陶器) has paralleled the birth of humanity. It was completed by shaping surrounding clay and firing it in a kiln. It led the culture of vessels until the Unified Silla period. Even in the Goryeo Dynasty, when porcelain (磁器) was created, earthenware and Onggi pottery maintained their lineage.
The National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage highlights the value of Goryeo pottery, which was used as everyday vessels and containers for premium food items, through a special exhibition. From the 5th of next month until January 14th of the following year, the exhibition titled "Goryeo Pottery - Sandohado Jusae Pottery (山島海道 舟載陶器)" will be held at the Mokpo Maritime Relics Exhibition Hall. Sandohado Jusae Pottery is a phrase recorded in the travel report "Seonhwabongsagoryeodogyeong (宣和奉使高麗圖經)" written by Song Dynasty envoy Seo Geung during his visit to Goryeo in 1123.
The exhibition consists of over 270 items including Goryeo pottery excavated from maritime and terrestrial sites, related ancient texts, paintings, reproduced pottery, video content, and models. Part 1, "10,000 Years of Vessel Culture and Goryeo Pottery," showcases about seventy pieces of pottery excavated from residential and burial sites, introducing the history, characteristics, and production techniques of Korean vessel culture. Part 2, "Goryeo, the Coexistence of Blue and Black Vessels," exhibits high-quality pottery, celadon, pottery liquor bottles engraved with Yangon (良? - wine consumed by kings), and various medical-use pottery. Part 3, "The Path of Goryeo Pottery, the Seashore," focuses on artifacts recovered from the Goryeo shipwrecks 'Taean Mado Ships 1, 2, and 3,' revealing the diverse uses of pottery.
The exhibition is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free. The institute announced, "To commemorate the exhibition, an international academic conference highlighting the value of Goryeo pottery will be held on October 20."
