MZ Solution, National Project for AI Fire Solution at Resource Circulation Center... Expected Application in Waste Battery Recycling

MGN Solution is promoting the commercialization of an intelligent (AI) fire solution for resource circulation centers.

On the 30th, MGN Solution announced that it will develop a "Leading Model for Intelligent Fire Suppression in Resource Circulation Facilities" through the 2023 purchase-linked project hosted by the Small and Medium Business Administration.

This national project is hosted by the Small and Medium Business Administration and Entech ENG, with MGN Solution and Hyundai Infracore participating as joint research and development institutions. The project is conditional on purchase by the demand agency, Gangseo-gu Office, and the development period is until June 2025. A company representative stated, "If this delivery is successfully completed, it is expected to expand to local governments nationwide."

According to the company, the recent surge in waste flowing into resource recovery facilities has simultaneously increased the frequency of fires. Therefore, early fire suppression has become more urgent.

The AI fire solution being developed by MGN Solution detects early fires such as flames and smoke within one second through UVIR (Ultraviolet and Infrared) flame detection sensors and intelligent CCTV footage. It then prevents fire spread through automatic suppression while integrating the fire location with the receiver to determine a safe evacuation route and sound an alarm.

According to the Korea Resource Circulation Energy Mutual Aid Association and the Korea Industrial Waste Landfill Association, the fire occurrence rate in the recycling industry from 2013 to 2020 reached as high as 88%. Waste fires emit serious harmful substances, and due to inadequate outdoor storage fire facilities, fires spread on a large scale, requiring many firefighting personnel.

According to the company, existing technologies only used ultraviolet and infrared detection sensors, resulting in insufficient accuracy, and suppression nozzles were limited, so they were used exclusively indoors. In contrast, the technology being developed by MGN Solution includes additional CCTV cameras and thermal imaging cameras, dramatically improving accuracy. Also, with AI control, the suppression nozzles can move freely, making it possible to use not only indoors but also outdoors.

A company representative explained, "It is an integrated fire solution that quickly recognizes early fires, automatically suppresses them, and enables safe evacuation," adding, "It can be widely applied to fire-prone places such as factories, logistics centers, highways, tunnels, cultural heritage sites, underground facilities, and all recycling facilities."

They added, "We plan to develop an AI (intelligent) automatic fire extinguishing robot soon in collaboration with a robotics company." They also noted, "As the importance of recycling grows due to global climate and supply chain issues, especially recycling facilities for electric vehicle waste batteries are expected to increase rapidly," adding, "Since reducing frequent fires during the disassembly and crushing process is considered a key task in the waste battery industry, our AI fire solution is also expected to be increasingly applied."
