Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is scheduled to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Group of Twenty (G20) summits consecutively next month to engage in a public relations campaign regarding the issue of releasing contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the ocean, Kyodo News reported on the 29th, citing government officials.
According to the report, Prime Minister Kishida will attend the ASEAN summit and the G20 summit from September 5 to 10, where he plans to explain that the ocean discharge of contaminated water from the nuclear plant meets international safety standards and seek understanding. Kishida also intends to hold individual meetings with leaders of participating countries.
Kishida is also steadily pursuing a summit meeting with China, which strongly opposes the discharge of contaminated water. The Japanese side aims to emphasize the safety of the water release based on a comprehensive report from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) during the prime minister’s overseas tour.
