Gwangbokhoe Gwangju Branch Holds Event Commemorating the 113th Anniversary of the Gyeongsul National Humiliation Day

On the morning of the 29th at Gwangju Natural Science High School

The Gwangbokhoe Gwangju Metropolitan City Branch (Branch Chief Go Wook) announced on the 28th that it will hold a commemorative event for the 113th anniversary of the Gyeongsul National Humiliation Day at 10 a.m. on the 29th at Gwangju Natural Science High School.


The event will be attended by Lee Jeong-seon, Superintendent of Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education, Jeong Hong-sik, Head of Gwangju Regional Veterans Affairs Office, and heads of various institutions and organizations, along with Gwangbokhoe members and students, to reflect on the painful loss of national sovereignty in the past.

The program will proceed with a greeting from Choi Beom-tae, Principal of Gwangju Natural Science High School, an opening address by Go Wook, Branch Chief of Gwangbokhoe Gwangju City Branch, a report on the history of the Gyeongsul National Humiliation by Min Su-ung, a descendant of independence activists, memorial speeches by Superintendent Lee Jeong-seon, Head Jeong Hong-sik of Gwangju Regional Veterans Affairs Office, and Park Yong-su, Director of Gwangju City Democracy Veterans Peace Bureau, followed by three cheers of "Manse" led by Choi Dong-ho, a member of Gwangbokhoe Gwangju Metropolitan City Branch.


Following this, a special lecture titled "Gyeongsul National Humiliation and the Independence Movement of Gwangju Agricultural School" by Professor Park Hae-hyun of Chodang University is also prepared.


To honor the sacrifices and hardships of the patriotic martyrs and independence activists, the event will conclude with lunch consisting of rice balls served in the school cafeteria.


Meanwhile, Gwangju Metropolitan City has enacted and is enforcing an ordinance that mandates the flying of flags at half-mast in government offices and schools, and Gwangbokhoe holds a memorial event every year on August 29.


A Gwangbokhoe official stated, "On Gyeongsul National Humiliation Day, all public institutions, schools, and households must fly flags at half-mast with solemn respect for the patriotic martyrs," adding, "Since it is the day we lost our country, people should wear black clothes and ties, and to remember the painful day of our nation’s loss and the bloodshed of the patriotic martyrs, it would be good to eat at least one meal with cold food."
