All-In Without Rest from the 21st to 26th
Meeting to Encourage Fisheries Workers and Prepare for Typhoon
Hong Nampyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam, collapsed during a trial related to election law violations held at the Changwon District Court on the 28th.
On that day, Mayor Hong was transported to a nearby hospital by the 119 emergency medical team, and the trial was adjourned.
As the news of Mayor Hong’s collapse rapidly spread throughout the region, it appears to be the result of continuous strenuous efforts without rest, including encouraging seafood merchants and local shopkeepers expected to be affected by Japan’s contaminated water discharge from the 21st to the 27th, as well as efforts to revive the economy.
Mayor Hong closely monitored the Eulji Exercise throughout the period from the 21st to the 24th, ensuring there were no gaps in the training content.
He also promptly managed recovery efforts in areas damaged by Typhoon “Khanun” and presided over meetings to prepare countermeasures for future typhoons.
On the 24th, he attended the completion ceremony of the Sapa-dong public parking lot to alleviate the severe parking shortage around the Changwon District Court and pledged to prevent inconvenience to citizens and visitors caused by parking shortages in the future.
That same evening, from 8 to 9 p.m., despite heavy rain, he participated in the Changwon City Autonomous Crime Prevention Association’s Citizen Safety Campaign held at the fountain plaza in Sangnam-dong, Seongsan-gu, aimed at strengthening the citizen safety network and securing daily safety.
On the 25th, he attended the Masan Fish Market Festival, encouraging seafood merchants and stating, “Participants and citizens can safely consume seafood.”
In particular, on the 26th and 27th, he consecutively held meetings on countermeasures for contaminated water discharge, seafood safety management, and consumption promotion.
A merchant selling seafood at Masan Fish Market told reporters, “I sincerely appreciate the mayor visiting Masan Fish Market, which has been hit hard by the contaminated water, and offering much encouragement,” adding, “I hope he recovers quickly and we can see the revitalization of Changwon’s economy again.”
Im, a city hall official, said, “I was worried seeing the mayor’s intense schedule of many countermeasure meetings and efforts to save the seafood industry last week,” and added, “I feel deeply saddened by the news of his collapse.”
