The Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea Health and Medical Information Service announced on the 28th that on the 29th, they will hold a 'Medical Data Joint Utilization Research Agreement Ceremony' to connect researchers and hospitals in order to activate medical data utilization research.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare has been implementing the Medical Data-Centered Hospital Support Project since 2020 to support hospitals in building and operating data infrastructure so that accumulated medical data in hospitals can be utilized for medical research and service development.
With the advancement of artificial intelligence and big data technologies, the demand for utilizing medical data is increasing; however, medical data is scattered across multiple institutions, and the characteristics and types of data vary by institution, making it difficult for digital healthcare researchers to collect and utilize the medical data needed for their research. Accordingly, as a follow-up measure to the 'Biohealth New Market Creation Strategy' announced last February, the 'Medical Data Joint Utilization Research Project' was promoted to strengthen joint research and collaboration between data-utilizing organizations such as industry and academia and medical data-centered hospitals.
Through the project, researchers can shorten the period required to explore data necessary for medical data research, enhance research plans through consulting, and prepare in advance for necessary discussions, thereby increasing the possibility of collaboration.
The Korea Health and Medical Information Service recruited demand organizations from companies in the medical digital field such as pharmaceuticals and medical devices at the end of April, and through three months of continuous consulting and negotiations with medical data-centered hospitals possessing the data researchers needed, a total of four research agreements were signed.
Samjin Pharmaceutical collaborates with Samsung Seoul Hospital, Kangbuk Samsung Hospital, Samsung Changwon Hospital, and Hanyang University Hospital; Hanmi Pharmaceutical collaborates with Korea University Anam Hospital and Korea University Guro Hospital; Hwanin Pharmaceutical collaborates with Seoul St. Mary's Hospital and Asan Medical Center; and Humandeep collaborates with Konyang University Hospital.
In the first part of the event, hospitals and companies will sign business agreements regarding medical data utilization and present the agreed research topics and the consultation process conducted. In the second part, researchers will share their experiences and difficulties encountered during the matching process and hold a roundtable discussion to discuss items requiring detailed criteria to activate medical data utilization.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare will continuously provide medical data consulting through the Korea Health and Medical Information Service to ensure smooth progress of the agreed research. Based on the discussions at the roundtable and the matching results, they plan to prepare guidelines that researchers can refer to when jointly utilizing hospitals and medical data.
