Last year, the number of Mongolian medical tourists visiting Korea was 14,148, ranking sixth after the United States, China, and others. Due to a lack of advanced treatment infrastructure, more than 80,000 Mongolians spend between 120 million and 150 million dollars annually on overseas medical care, with about 50 million dollars spent in Korea, making Mongolia an emerging medical tourism market.
Gangnam-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Jo Seongmyeong) held the "Gangnam Medical Tourism Overseas Briefing Session" on the 24th at the Millennium Plaza Hotel in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, to target the emerging medical tourism market in Mongolia.
Gangnam-gu planned a promotional strategy this year to attract Mongolian medical tourists, completing the first phase with a familiarization tour inviting Mongolian health and medical officials, the second phase with charitable medical services, and now the third phase with an on-site briefing session. The briefing session organized by the district included participation from six cooperating medical institutions in the district (Gangnam Severance Hospital, Gangnam CHA Hospital, Nanuri Hospital, Live Dental Clinic, Byuseong Urology Clinic, and Stantop Urology Clinic).
A total of 30 institutions, including Mongolian medical institutions and medical tourism-related organizations, were invited for business meetings, promoting the excellence of Gangnam-gu’s medical tourism, the district’s unique “one-stop concierge service,” and the medical tourism platform “Medical Gangnam.”
During the briefing session, a charitable medical case was presented about Mandakh, a 14-year-old Mongolian girl with congenital microtia, whose ear was reconstructed in July. The Mongolian Ministry of Health presented a letter of appreciation to Gangnam-gu and Gangnam Severance Hospital.
On the 24th and 25th, visits and mutual exchanges will be conducted with the Mongolian National Maternity Hospital and Mongolian National First Hospital, which participated in the Gangnam-gu familiarization tour in May, to discuss practical cooperation matters. On the 25th, there is a plan to appear on MNB Mongolian National Broadcasting to introduce Gangnam-gu’s specialized medical tourism projects and to be interviewed about the charitable medical case.
From the 25th to the 27th, Gangnam-gu will participate in the Korean Medical Tourism Expo hosted by the Korea Tourism Organization at Chinggis Khaan Square in Mongolia, operating a Gangnam-gu promotional booth. Promotional events and consultations will be conducted for local visitors. Additionally, one-on-one business consultations between medical institutions and buyers will be held at the B2B briefing session.
Jo Seongmyeong, Mayor of Gangnam-gu, stated, “We will actively attract medical tourists through systematic promotional strategies by country and continue the reputation of Gangnam as a leading global medical tourism city.”
