Global DRAM Sales Increase 20% in Q2
TrendForce "HBM Shipments Rise Due to AI Boom"
DRAM sales rebounded after one year. In the second quarter of this year, global semiconductor industry DRAM sales increased by about 20% compared to the previous quarter.
On the 24th, Taiwanese market research firm TrendForce announced that global DRAM sales in the second quarter of this year reached approximately $11.43 billion, a 20.4% increase from the previous quarter.
TrendForce explained, "The increased demand for artificial intelligence (AI) servers drove the growth in shipments of high bandwidth memory (HBM)," adding, "All three major DRAM suppliers saw an increase in shipments."
Samsung Electronics, the market share leader, posted DRAM sales of $4.53 billion in the second quarter, up 8.6% from $4.17 billion in the previous quarter. However, Samsung's market share fell by 4.3 percentage points from 43.9% in the first quarter to 39.6% in the second quarter.
SK Hynix's DRAM sales in the second quarter surged by a remarkable 48.9% to $3.44 billion from $2.31 billion in the previous quarter. Consequently, its market share rose from 24.4% to 30.1%, securing the second position.
TrendForce analyzed, "SK Hynix's shipments increased by more than 35% compared to the previous quarter," and "Shipments of double data rate (DDR) 5 and HBM, which have higher average selling prices (ASP), grew significantly."
Micron, ranked third, recorded DRAM sales of $2.95 billion in the second quarter, a 15.7% increase from $2.55 billion in the previous quarter. However, its market share declined from 26.9% to 25.8%, ceding the second place to SK Hynix.
TrendForce analyzed, "Although Micron was somewhat late in developing HBM, DDR5 shipments accounted for a significant portion, helping to maintain relatively stable ASP."
