Tokyo Electric Power Company announced on the 24th that it will begin releasing contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the ocean starting at 1 PM that day.

The Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei) reported that the concentration of tritium (hydrogen-3) in the contaminated water diluted with seawater has met safety standards, and that weather and other conditions were favorable, leading Tokyo Electric Power Company to make this decision.

In the initial discharge, Tokyo Electric Power Company plans to release 7,800 tons of contaminated water over 17 days.
