Dongseo University Musical Department, Cultivating Artistic Talent Directly On Site

Selected for the 'Preliminary Artist Field Connection Support Project'

Collaboration with Field Organizations, Providing Art Field Experience

Dongseo University (President Jang Je-guk) is embarking on a field-linked education project to nurture aspiring artists.

On the 22nd, Dongseo University announced that it has been selected for the “Field-Linked Support Project for Aspiring Artists in Arts Universities,” a public contest project funded by the Arts Promotion Fund organized by the Korea Arts & Culture Education Service, and will receive a total of 200 million KRW in project funding.

Previously, the Musical Department at Dongseo University proposed the project “Field-Linkage for Aspiring Artists through the Establishment of the On-Campus Virtual Company ‘Dongseo Musical Entertainment’” for the “2023 Field-Linked Support Project for Aspiring Artists.”

The newly established “2023 Aspiring Artists Support Project” is a project that collaborates with various organizations such as private arts groups, cultural foundations, theaters, and exhibition halls to provide aspiring artists receiving university education with opportunities for field experience in various areas including creation, performance, planning, technology, and administration. It also supports educational programs to facilitate future growth and connections. A total of 131 applications were received, and 38 were finally selected.

Dongseo University Musical Department’s on-campus virtual company, “Dongseo Musical Entertainment,” has partnered with musical-specialized companies such as Interpark Theater, Sam Company, EMK Musical Company, and Shinsee Company to strengthen capabilities through intensive extracurricular special lectures during the summer vacation, including company visits, tap dance, Pilates, and vocal masterclasses.

Starting in September, the department will produce and perform regular musicals such as “Heartstrings” and “Remember 1919,” as well as regional company-linked performances like “Lonely Castle,” “Chokseoksanseong Aria,” and “The Restaurant That Forgot Its Orders,” supporting field training and simultaneously aiding members’ advancement to professional stages.

Professor Oh Se-jun, head of the project and chair of the Musical Department, emphasized, “This will be an important project for developing regional cultural content, nurturing local resident-type talent, and linking to central stages.”

Professor Oh also stated, “In addition to various educational programs such as opening industry-linked courses and operating IFS company-linked programs, we plan to support graduates’ entry into the field by providing experiences with systems identical to the field, such as drafting standard contracts and enrolling in artists’ employment insurance through the establishment of a virtual company.”

The Musical Department at Dongseo University, the first four-year regular university musical department established in Korea, will change its name to the Musical Entertainment Department starting in 2024 and recruit majors in Musical Acting and Staff.

With an expansion into entertainment, the program will simultaneously operate to nurture K-POP entertainers and leaders, aiming to cultivate diverse talents in the fields of dance, singing, and acting arts that musicals encompass.
