People 'Raking' the Beach... Daesun Brewery and MZ Generation Environmental Group 'Beachcombing'

Picking Up 1,000 Cigarette Butts at Gwangalli Beach

"Picking up and sweeping, we came to comb the beach."

Daesun Brewery (CEO Jo Woo-hyun) conducted a 'beachcombing' event at Gwangalli Beach in Busan together with members of an environmental group mainly composed of the MZ generation.

Planned under the theme "Together GREEN, Blue Light Gwangalli," this event is a prominent project showcasing Daesun Brewery, a representative local company in Busan's ESG management philosophy and commitment to regional coexistence.

People 'Raking' the Beach... Daesun Brewery and MZ Generation Environmental Group 'Beachcombing' Daesun Joojo and members of Sseujup are conducting a beachcombing event at Gwangalli.

On the morning of the 19th, Daesun Brewery carried out a 'beachcombing' activity collecting trash such as cigarette butts along Gwangalli Beach with the environmental group "People Who Pick Up Trash." Beachcombing is a term combining "beach" and "combing."

Daesun Brewery employees and about 10 members of "Sseujupin" collected 100L of trash during the event. In particular, they eradicated about 1,000 cigarette butts, the main culprit of microplastic pollution and the key target of this cleanup activity.

The event planned by Daesun Brewery and Sseujupin aimed not only at environmental protection but also at revitalizing the local commercial district. The goal was to clean up the struggling commercial area due to the economic downturn and make it a street where customers want to visit. The event also had the added benefit of promoting local businesses.

In early March, Daesun Brewery and Sseujupin also held a "Plogging Blue" event in the Seomyeon commercial district, collecting 400L of trash and about 4,000 cigarette butts.

Sseujupin is conducting various activities to spread the culture of proper cigarette butt disposal. In 2022, they installed cigarette butt collection boxes in the Seomyeon shopping area and created a management system for the boxes in cooperation with the merchants' association. In July, they visited stores with installed collection boxes to conduct awareness surveys among smokers and non-smokers.

Daesun Brewery supports Sseujupin's activities through regular monthly sponsorship.

Jo Woo-hyun, CEO of Daesun Brewery, said, "I hope this event will help keep Busan's tourist attraction Gwangalli Beach clean and bring renewed attention to the surrounding commercial district," adding, "We will continue to support making such events regular."

Bae Eun-ji, the Busan leader of Sseujupin, said, "Discarded cigarette butts are the main cause of marine microplastic pollution, so we plan to conduct citizen monitoring of cigarette butt collection boxes this September."
