Gyeonggi-do Conducts Special Inspection on Road Damage... 1,995 Repairs Completed Road Damage Repair

Gyeonggi Province announced on the 21st that it conducted a special inspection of 11,291 km of local and city/county roads within the province, which are vulnerable to damage during the rainy season, and discovered 1,995 cases of road damage (potholes), all of which have been repaired.

Earlier, Gyeonggi Province, together with 31 cities and counties in the province, inspected a total of 11,291 km from July 31 to August 7, including 55 routes (2,281 km) of local and national roads managed by Gyeonggi Province and 9,010 km of city/county roads managed by the cities and counties.

Road damage (potholes) refers to a type of damage where the asphalt mixture loses adhesion due to poor road pavement construction management or infiltration of rainwater into cracked pavement areas, causing the pavement surface to be concavely depressed in a pot (bowl) shape and fall off.

During this inspection, Gyeonggi Province found 129 cases of road damage (potholes) on local and national roads under its own management. Additionally, 1,866 cases of road damage (potholes) were confirmed on roads inspected by the cities and counties.

Among the 55 routes inspected, Gyeonggi Province piloted the 'Artificial Intelligence Pavement Damage Automatic Detection System' on 9 routes alongside general visual inspections. This was in accordance with a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on July 14.

The automatic detection system is a device where an AI program analyzes video footage of roads to determine pavement damage, offering advantages in cost reduction and accuracy compared to visual inspections by personnel.

Gyeonggi Province plans to continuously strengthen its collaboration with the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology, an affiliate of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, to maximize the performance of the automatic detection system used in this inspection.

Cheon Byeong-mun, head of the Road Safety Division of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "Through special regular road inspections, we expect to proactively respond to road damage (potholes) that threaten vehicle safety and create a safe road environment." He added, "We will continue to strive through active administration to ensure that residents can use the roads safely."
