In South Africa, known as the country with the highest crime rate, an average of 68 murder victims occur daily.

According to statistics released by the South African Police on the 18th (local time), a total of 6,228 murder victims were reported in South Africa during the second quarter of this year, from April to June.

When converted to a daily average, this means 68.4 people fall victim to crime each day.

By region, KwaZulu-Natal Province had the highest number with 1,584 victims, closely followed by Gauteng Province, the most populous, with 1,489 victims.

Next were Eastern Cape Province (1,139 victims), Western Cape Province (939 victims), Mpumalanga Province (332 victims), North West Province (231 victims), Free State Province (227 victims), Limpopo Province (197 victims), and Northern Cape Province (90 victims).

The number of sexual crime victims recorded during the same period also reached 11,616, with rape victims accounting for the majority at 9,252.

Even before this police announcement, South Africa had already gained notoriety as one of the countries with the highest violent crime rates in the world, with about 20,000 murders annually among a population of approximately 60 million.

In a survey released by security company ADT in July, South Africa was ranked as the most dangerous travel destination in the world.

The UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) analyzed the rates of robbery and murder per 100,000 people in countries most visited by holidaymakers from 2017 to 2019.

The survey found that South Africa’s robbery rate was 852.8 per 100,000 people. In the second quarter alone this year, there were 40,550 robberies involving home invasions, and face-to-face crimes increased by more than 18%, from 137,145 cases in the previous quarter to 162,518 cases in the second quarter.

As of 2016, South Africa’s gross domestic product (GDP) was $294.8 billion, accounting for 20% of the total GDP of Sub-Saharan Africa, making it an economically stable country.

However, it is known for frequent theft and robbery incidents due to extreme wealth disparity.
