Jung Jong-bok, the mayor of Gijang County, recently participated on the 17th in the ‘Seafood Consumption and Fishing Village Vacation Promotion Campaign’ to support fishermen struggling with the radioactive wastewater issue and to revitalize fishing villages.
This campaign was launched to encourage the public to take vacations in fishing villages and to promote the consumption of domestic seafood during the summer holiday season. It has been jointly hosted since July 27 by Congressman Seong Il-jong, chairman of the People Power Party’s ‘Our Sea Protection Verification Task Force (TF),’ and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
The campaign proceeds by each participant engaging in promotional activities to encourage seafood consumption and fishing village vacations, then nominating the next participant.
Mayor Jung Jong-bok joined the campaign upon the recommendation of Kim Jae-yoon, mayor of Geumjeong District Office, and nominated Kim Jin-hong, mayor of Dong District Office, and Kim Young-wook, mayor of Busanjin District Office, as the next participants.

On that day, Mayor Jung, along with his staff, held a sign reading “Summer Health Boost with Our Seafood,” encouraging the consumption of local seafood and vacations by the fishing village sea, sharing a message to support the struggling fishing villages and fishermen.
He especially emphasized the safety of local seafood through thorough radioactive safety inspections and appealed for the consumption of regional seafood.
Mayor Jung Jong-bok said, “Fishermen are facing many difficulties due to the recent radioactive wastewater issue, and especially in Gijang County, where the proportion of those engaged in fishing is high, the entire county is feeling a sense of anxiety.”
He continued, “I hope people regain vitality by eating Gijang’s specialty health foods such as conger eel, seaweed including miyeok and dashima, and anchovies, all harvested from the nutrient-rich clean waters of Gijang. I also hope visitors come to Gijang, which offers abundant sights, food, and entertainment, to create joyful memories during their vacation.”
On July 21, Gijang County signed a ‘Seafood Radioactivity Inspection Business Agreement’ with Gijang Fisheries Cooperative, initiating the establishment of a proactive, continuous radioactive monitoring system for caught, auctioned, and distributed seafood within the jurisdiction.
According to the agreement, Gijang County installed two of its radioactive nuclide analyzers at the Gijang Fisheries Cooperative auction site. The cooperative conducts sample collection, preprocessing, and radioactivity measurement of seafood, actively ensuring the radioactive safety of local seafood.
