Global mobile market data analytics company Sensor Tower released the '2023 Q2 Store Intelligence Data Digest' report on the 17th. This report provides information about the global mobile market, including the most popular apps and games, top markets, publishers, and trends based on data from the second quarter of 2023.
According to the report, the total number of downloads worldwide in Q2 was 34.3 billion, a 1.5% decrease compared to the same period last year. Google Play recorded 26.2 billion downloads, more than three times the App Store's 8.1 billion downloads. However, Google Play's Q2 downloads decreased by 2.7% year-over-year, while the App Store saw a 2.5% increase during the same period.
'TikTok' ranked first as the most downloaded app worldwide, maintaining its top position for 12 consecutive quarters. ByteDance, the publisher of TikTok, succeeded in placing two apps, 'TikTok' and 'CapCut,' within the global top 5 download rankings since Q4 2022.
Looking at the top mobile games by global download rankings, 'Subway Surfers' took first place with 57 million downloads, a slight decrease from the previous quarter. 'Garena Free Fire' ranked second.
Meta held the position of the largest app publisher based on global download numbers. Among the top 5 apps in Q2, three were Meta apps: 'Instagram,' 'Facebook,' and 'WhatsApp.'
The top market by download volume was India, with 6.6 billion app downloads. A significant portion of these downloads occurred mainly on Google Play, a trend observed in the top 10 markets excluding the United States.
'Netflix' slightly increased its download numbers by expanding password sharing restrictions to over 100 countries in May. However, it faced challenges in attracting new users compared to competing apps. 'HBO Max,' 'Amazon Prime Video,' 'Hulu,' and 'Disney+' all achieved new user rates above 7%, while Netflix's new user rate was only 3%.
