The Chilseong General Market Association (President Jang Sang-hoon) is hosting the 14th Good Festival from the 17th to the 19th for three days, sponsored by Daegu City and Buk-gu Office, and organized by the Daegu Traditional Market Promotion Foundation.
The Good Festival, the representative festival of Chilseong General Market, was held independently by the merchants' association until the 12th event. Since Chilseong General Market was selected as Korea's first commercial district revitalization project, the festival has been conducted as part of the revitalization project starting from the 13th event.
This year marks the final year of the five-year commercial district revitalization project. To summarize the achievements so far and to widely promote the newly transformed and advancing Chilseong General Market, a representative traditional market of Daegu with a proud history and tradition, the festival has been prepared with a variety of repertoires.
On the first day, the 17th, starting from 3 PM, there will be the Good Performance & Merchant Song Contest preliminaries and performances, as well as a pre-event performance of the Merchant Challenge Battle (Speed Quiz, Team Challenge: Catch 100 Seconds). Following the opening ceremony at 7 PM, the finals of the Merchant Song Contest and congratulatory performances by popular singers Park Mi-young and Seo Ji-o will be held spectacularly until 9 PM.
On the second day, the 18th, from 3 PM, the Good Performance & Seven Star Song Contest preliminaries, performances, and a live radio broadcast will continue until 6 PM. From 7 PM, congratulatory performances by popular singers Park Gyu-ri and Jung Mi-ae, the runner-up of Miss Trot, will take place. Singer Jung Mi-ae is from Buk-gu, Daegu.
On the last day, the 19th, from 3 PM, the Seven Star Song Contest preliminaries, performances, and live radio broadcast will continue until 6 PM. From 7 PM, there will be a Chilseong General Market-branded craft beer drinking contest, the finals of the Seven Star Song Contest for those who passed the preliminaries, and a special invited performance by popular singer Choi Ji-hyun. Notably, a special performance by Kim Hye-yeon, a traditional trot singer who is explosively popular as a leading figure in the trot music scene, is scheduled.
Chilseong General Market was selected for the Commercial District Renaissance Project led by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups in 2018. From September 2018 to September 2023, a five-year project with a total budget of 8 billion KRW has been invested to revitalize the commercial district through various initiatives such as renovating deteriorated old facilities, expanding facilities, and improving the environment.
Efforts to enhance the market’s status as Daegu’s representative market where culture and arts harmonize include developing Chilseong General Market-branded craft beer as a specialty product, expanding jjambbong (spicy seafood noodle soup) specialty facilities to attract customers, creating a history exhibition hall, outdoor stage, photo zones, expanding major street signposts, producing comprehensive guide maps, making and attaching market promotional nameplates, operating cultural and artistic clubs, and producing a documentary novel that captures the market’s history and vision, providing visitors with sights and entertainment.
Jang Sang-hoon, president of the Chilseong General Market Association, said, “Through the five years of the commercial district revitalization project, Chilseong General Market has moved beyond the image of a place just for buying and selling goods, and its status has been significantly elevated. We expect that this Good Festival will further strengthen the unity among merchants and that the results of the Chilseong General Market commercial district revitalization project will gradually become more visible.”
Located in Chilseong-dong, Buk-gu, Daegu, Chilseong Market consists of nine markets including a flower market and a fruit and vegetable market, with a total of 975 stores. It is the second largest traditional market in Daegu, following Seomun Market.
