Samsung Electronics' new foldable phone, which recently began official sales in over 50 countries, is priced lower in South Korea compared to overseas markets. However, the company is employing aggressive sales strategies such as trade-in programs, additional discounts, and bundling offers.
On Samsung Electronics' Australian website, the Galaxy Z Fold5 (256GB) is priced at 2,599 Australian dollars, approximately 2.25 million KRW. This is about 150,000 KRW more expensive than the unlocked phone price in South Korea (2.09 million KRW). However, with various benefits available until the 17th, the price can be reduced by up to 1.65 million KRW (1,909 Australian dollars), bringing the effective purchase price down to 590,000 KRW.
Specifically, customers can upgrade to 512GB storage (valued at 350 Australian dollars), and receive up to 1.15 million KRW (1,330 Australian dollars) in trade-in discounts. For example, returning a Z Flip4 1TB (valued at 830 Australian dollars) grants an additional 500 Australian dollars discount, totaling a 1.15 million KRW discount on the product. Additionally, benefits include Samsung Care Plus insurance (229 Australian dollars) and a 5% discount when purchasing a Galaxy Tab S9 or Watch6 together.
In the United States, the Z Flip5's retail price is about 500,000 KRW higher than in South Korea. However, a trade-in program offering up to 1.32 million KRW (1,000 USD) discount allows customers to purchase the new device at a lower price by returning their existing Samsung phone.
In the Brazilian market, the Z Flip5 (256GB) is priced at about 7,000 Brazilian Reais (approximately 1.9 million KRW), which is more expensive than in South Korea (about 1.4 million KRW). However, until the 27th of this month, customers who purchase a Z Flip5 256GB device can upgrade to 512GB, and those who buy a Z Fold5 512GB can upgrade to 1TB. This storage upgrade promotion was only available during the pre-sale period in South Korea and has now ended. Additionally, the Brazilian Samsung website offers a 10% discount on all models of the newly released Galaxy Watch6 when purchased together with the foldable new phones. Although the retail price is higher than in South Korea, Samsung is using storage upgrades and bundling strategies.

In Brazil, the second Sunday of August is celebrated as 'Father's Day,' and Samsung advertised on its website that the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Fold5, among other new products, are "perfect gifts for fathers" in celebration of this day.
Samsung's confidence stems from the positive response to the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Fold5 in the Brazilian market. According to local media reports, sales during the one-week pre-sale period increased by 40% compared to the same period for previous models. Gustavo Assuncao, Vice President of Samsung Electronics Brazil, stated, "The Galaxy Z product line has evolved not only in design but also in performance," adding, "We listen to consumers and develop products based on what they consider important."
Brazil, with a population exceeding 200 million, is experiencing rapid growth in 5G smartphone adoption. Samsung holds a dominant market share in this region. According to KOTRA data as of July 2021, Samsung's smartphone market share in Brazil was 42%, ranking first. Motorola, in second place, held 21%, about half of Samsung's share, while Apple (14%) and Xiaomi (12%) showed significant gaps behind.
India, with a population of 1.4 billion, is also a key market where Samsung and other smartphone manufacturers are focusing their efforts. The new Galaxy phones will officially launch in India starting on the 18th. Samsung achieved a 20% market share in India in the first quarter, securing the number one position in the Indian smartphone market for two consecutive quarters.
In India, the Z Flip5 (256GB) is priced at approximately 1.6 million KRW, and the Z Fold5 (256GB) at about 2.5 million KRW. Although these prices are higher than in the Korean market, pre-sale benefits worth 320,000 KRW and 370,000 KRW respectively are offered. They also advertise discounts of up to 600,000 KRW for purchases made via live broadcast the day before the launch.
Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, Samsung is running a promotion where customers who take selfies with the Z Flip5 or Fold5 can enter a random draw to win a prize of 500,000 pounds (approximately 800 million KRW). This event runs until the 24th of next month and invites customers to visit nearby Samsung stores, take a selfie, and register their name. Advertised with the phrase "You can become rich with just one selfie," this campaign aims to attract consumers into Samsung stores.
